Broiler production up, 2008 estimates raised: USDA

By Alicia Karapetian

Broiler production in January 2008 was 3.22 billion pounds, a 6.4 percent increase over the same period a year earlier, according to the latest Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Outlook released by USDA.

The report attributed the January production increase to both a jump in birds slaughtered — 784 million — and a 1.2 percent increase in average liveweight, reaching 5.56 pounds.

In light of the January numbers, USDA revised its first-quarter 2008 production estimate by 125 million pounds to 9.08 billion, or 5.2 percent higher than the same period in 2007, citing weekly chick placement numbers that are about 3 percent higher than the same timeframes in 2007.
